Earth First Thinking

While many companies announce their green initiatives with great fanfare, Prudential Fox and Roach Realtors, the largest real estate firm in the Mid-Atlantic region has quietly adopted an environmental strategy that allowed them to stop generating over 29,000 pounds of plastic and metal waste during a 14-month period by changing the way they print color documents.

Common Sense Solutions

Last year the real estate giant partnered with DocuSense, a West Chester document consulting company and adopted a Managed Print Services solution that replaced almost all of the laser color printers in their 60 offices with solid-ink color printers. Solid-ink technology produces 90% less waste than laser printers by using a crayon-like block of ink about the size of a golf ball instead of the traditional toner cartridge. By eliminating the cartridges, the residual scrap plastic and metal is significantly reduced.

Reduction of Fossil Fuel Use (Carbon Footprint)

Most companies would have been delighted just to cut that waste but Prudential accomplished much more. Since it takes 3 quarts of oil to produce one toner cartridge, the company also saved over 5,000 gallons of petroleum that would have been used to manufacture those cartridges.

Making Green By Going Green

However the benefits for Prudential didn’t end there. According to Bob Melso, Vice-President of DocuSense, “Solid-Ink technology is less wasteful and it also costs less per print. By converting to the new technology, we are estimating we will save over 1.2 million dollars in printing supply and service costs during a three year period”. (That’s $400k/yr for those counting at home)
